Acekard 2i firmware 1.4.1 fix

The anticipated Acekard 2i firmware update has been released. This update fixes the compatibility of the card with DSi firmware 1.4.1.

The update can only be run on DS, DS Lite or DSi firmware 1.3 (or less) if your Acekard 2i has never been updated or DSi firmware 1.4 if your Acekard 2i is already updated for 1.4 firmware. It is very important that you run this update before updating your DSi to firmware 1.4.1

After the update, the Acekard will have a new icon/text in the menu (see picture).

Nintendo DSi Menu Ver 1.4.1 blocks all flashcarts

Nintendo has just blocked flashards on the DSi yet again with the release of firmware update 1.4.1 today. However, it does not seem like all flashcards have been affected.

Nintendo’s system menu update page says the new firmware provides “behind-the-scenes improvements”, but as expected that is really just PR speak for “no more homebrew for you”. This is the first incremental update for the DSi in over a year, yet it is not believed there are any new features for the DSi outside of flashcards being blocked.

Update fixes DSi firmware 1.4 block

The eagerly anticipated Acekard 2i firmware update has been released, proving once and for all that the card is in fact update-able. This update fixes the compatibility of the card with DSi firmware 1.4.

Two update files are included in the download. Use the DSi labeled update to update your card. However, if you have multiple Acekard 2i cards that you wish to update all in a row then run the DSL update from a DS Lite to be able to update multiple cards without powering off the system. If you only have one card just use the DSi update.

Setup Acekard System Files

Navigate to the download section
Download the latest version of the official firmware
Insert you microSD into the microSD Reader
Plug your microSD Reader into an USB port
Browse to the microSD
Extract all files from the .zip downloaded during step 2 to the microSD
Make sure files are extracted to the root of your microSD (not in a subfolder). Example:

DSi firmware v1.4 drops in Japan and Europe

Nintendo DSi owners in Japan and Europe have already started digitally receiving their copies of the newest firmware, v1.4. The update brings little more than Facebook photo uploading and also lists "faster image display speed in the DSi camera." Alongside these additions, the following Flashcards have been blocked:

Befitting of the homebrew crackin’ reputation recently, Nintendo figured they’d take the opportunity of the DSi’s fresh hardware to. As you can see here, that plan didn’t last long.

Acekard, makers of many fine flashcarts for the original DS and DS Lite, have done in a month or so what many thought might take much longer, or even be impossible: load homebrew code on the DSi. And on top of that, Acekard is claiming support for all of the DSi’s new hardware goodness like the camera and SD card, which is surely wetting many a homebrew mouth today with anticipatory drool.

Introduction

The Acekard 2i was the first flash cartridge released to the public which is capable of booting on the Nintendo DSi released only one month after the DSi. The Acekard is considered by many a cartridge which offers reliable functionality with the price tag of a budget cartridge. The software of this cartridge doesn't offer any bells or whistles some others do but the constant updates of the unofficial AKAIO firmware ensures all the newest games will run and any which don't will be fixed very quickly thanks to the dedicated work of Normmatt, Smiths and Gelu.

Box Contents and Packaging

Over time the packaging and contents of the Acekard 2i has changed and currently the Acekard 2i is packaged on its own in a small box with the Acekard 2 logo printed on the front and an orange sticker which says 'DSi Compatible' on it. The only difference between the box of the Acekard 2 and the Acekard 2i is this sticker.

Hardware

The Acekard 2i is concealed in a black plastic shell the same size as an original DSi cartridge. The shell is held tightly together by glue as opposed to the original Acekard and RPG which were held together by screws and tabs on the sides of the cartridge. The build quality of the cartridge seems quite durable and does not appear as though it would easily break. The microSD slot is located at the top of the cartridge and is spring loaded which has the added advantage of allowing the microSD to be easily inserted and removed although the springs in all DS cartridges are often prone to breakage.

The Acekard 2i also has an updateable bootloader which may assist in bypassing future flash cartridge checks by Nintendo. The bootloader is updated using the console and is very quick.

Revisions

There have been two revisions of the Acekard 2i since release. The only differences between these revisions is that the original revision (Hardware ID 44) has a larger internal chip which leads to a slight bump protruding from the front of the chip. The second revision (Hardware ID 81) does not have this bump. The chip revision can be found at the bottom of the START > Help screen on the official firmware.

Software

Firmware Installation

The installation of the firmware is similar to that of other slot 1 flash cartridges and is very simple to install:

Download the latest official firmware from here.
Extract files in the archive to the root of the microSD.

Content Installation

The Acekard firmware has a built in file browser so once the firmware is installed content (media, homebrew, ROMs) can be placed anywhere on the microSD card and can be accessed from the file browser of the firmware.

Skin Installation: Extra skins for the Acekard can be downloaded from here. Installation of the skins is very simple: extract the files from the downloaded skins to a subdirectory under the '_ak2\ui' directory on the microSD. To apply the newly installed skin select START > System Options > Interface Theme and use the left and right DPAD buttons to select a skin and then press the A button to confirm.

Cheat Installation: The largest Nintendo DS cheat database can be download from here. Although the Acekard firmware supports two different cheat file formats it is best to use the USRCHEAT.DAT file from the downloaded archive as the other format is very slow on the Acekard. To update the cheats extract USRCHEAT.DAT from the archive into the '_ak2\cheats' directory on the microSD card.

User Interface

The interface of the Acekard firmware is the same as the Acekard 2 and RPG. With the default skin selected the top screen displays the time, date and calendar. The bottom screen is used for navigating through the microSD and also contains a menu button at the bottom right hand corner of the screen and a brightness button and microSD access indicator at the top right hand corner of the screen.

The microSD can be navigated and files opened by either tapping on the icon of the folder/file or pressing the A button when a file/folder is selected to go up a directory level press the B button or the arrow in the top left corner of the screen.
ROMs and homebrew (.NDS files) are displayed with their internal icon on their right hand side and by default show their filename, this can be changed by pressing START > System Options > Advanced > ROM Name in List and setting it to Internal Name. Pressing SELECT also toggles between a text view and icon view.

The boot time, ROM loading time and scrolling functions of the firmware are very quick however loading the contents of folders which have many ROMs can be quite slow and get annoying over time.

Functionality

File Management: The file management options are available under the START menu and allow files to be moved (cut and paste), copied and deleted.

DS Download Play: This option can be toggled on and off under START > Patches > DS Download Play. Enabling this option improves compatibility when using the download play functionality of a commercial game.

Soft Reset: This option is located under START > Patches > Soft-Reset. Enabling this option allows for resetting back to the firmware from a commercial ROM using the key combination L+R+A+B+X+Y without powering the system off.

Autorun: The autorun option allows the user to automatically load the last played ROM when booting. This option is available under START > Patches > Autorun and can be overridden by holding down the B button while loading the Acekard 2i.

Cheats: The cheat engine of the Acekard 2i firmware allows for USRCHEAT.DAT files and Action Replay files to be used. The cheat action can be toggled and the cheat file can be selected under START > Patches.

Languages: The Acekard firmware supports multiple languages. The languages which are packaged with the firmware are English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and Netherlands. The language can be selected under START > System Options > Interface language.

Trim ROM when Copying: This option is located under START > System Options > Trim ROM when copying. When this option is enabled ROMs which are copied using the Acekard firmware are automatically trimmed thus reducing required storage space.

ROM Name in List: This option allows you to choose how ROMs are listed in the file browser. The choices available are Normal (file name and extension), Hide ROM Ext. (file name) and Internal Name (name stored inside the ROM). This option is located under START > System Options > Advanced > ROM Name in List.

Properties: The properties window shows basic information about the file or folder and allows a shortcut to be created which is shown at the root of the file browser. If the file selected is a ROM various options can be configured which apply only to the selected ROM. The options which can be changed are DS download play, soft-reset, cheat support, enabled cheats and selected save slot.

Help: The help window shows the button usage, firmware revision and hardware revision. The window also shows an FAQ button which when pressed displays a panel with frequently asked questions.

Like with other modern slot 1 flash cartridges the commercial ROM compatibility of the Acekard 2i works flawlessly with all tested games working without errors.

The DS Download Play functionality of the Acekard 2i works well although it is important to ensure the DS Download Play option is enabled under START > System Options > Patches.

Homebrew Support

Homebrew support works well and all homebrew is automatically DLDI patched by the firmware during the loading of the homebrew. Although I have not witnessed any problem homebrew it has been reported on some forums that some homebrew is incompatible with the DSi. The following homebrew were tested:

Battery Life
